Gas Test Atmospheres (GTA ) – MSMWHS217

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to determine if it is safe for the proposed work. It applies to situations where an individual is required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a confined space or workspace, and to interpret readings and take appropriate action. Working environments may be hazardous, unpredictable and expose workers to visible and invisible atmospheric hazards.

WHS Act 2012, Regulations, Codes of Practice & relevant Australian Standards Risk assessment, SWMS/JSAs and the hierarchy of control Typical gas detectors and common atmospheric hazards Gas generation and symptoms of common hazardous gases Oxygen deficiency, oxygen enrichment, Lower Explosive Levels Exposure limits (TWA, STEL, IDLH) and interpreting readings Gas detector bump testing, challenge testing and calibration Preparing for, conducting and recording gas tests Gas detector maintenance and record-keeping

Suitable for:

Confined space entrants and standby persons, maintenance and engineering staff, mining and resources personnel, and anyone required to carry out gas testing prior to entering or while working in a confined space, hot work area, or other hazardous atmosphere.

Course Time:

2-3 Hours

Assessment:

Participants will be assessed via a questionnaire and practical demonstration of skills. Participants with literacy/numeracy difficulties or physical conditions should speak with the Trainer to discuss alternative assessment approaches. Applicants will be required to undertake physical activity to meet all the assessment criteria to a satisfactory level.

Qualification: 

On successful completion, each participant will be issued with a Statement of Attainment.
